The district of Morden in the London Borough of Merton was until 1926, a tranquil place with a little collection of cottages and farms. The development of the tube station here transformed the rural landscape, which was suddenly within easy reach of central London just seven miles away. By 1928 development of housing was in full swing. History still remains here though with Morden Hall Park surviving the surge of redevelopment. Built in the 1770’s, Morden Hall Park along with Morden Hall itself was owned and occupied by the wealthy Garth family for generations until it was sold to a tobacco merchant who utilised the watermills to grind tobacco into snuff up until around 1922.
Although no longer the rural landscape it once was, Morden has a lovely collection of parks, open spaces and playing fields that were created from former country estates. Morden also has good amenities, a choice of shops, eateries, pubs and cultural attractions.
