Montacute

The village of Montacute in Somerset is home to the architecturally beautiful Montacute House, a late Elizabethan country house that is a perfect example of the period. Montacute House is considered to be one of the finest houses to survive from the Elizabethan era and as such, has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building as well as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The house is fully open to the public and its Long Gallery is the longest in England, serving now as a regional outpost of the National Portrait Gallery. Montacute House is constructed of the local Ham Hill stone.
