Moffat

Moffat, which translated from the Gaelic means "The Long Plain", is a spa town in the Scottish county of Dumfries and Galloway, on the River Annan. This Britain in Bloom winner has been a popular tourist resort since the Victorian era, when it became popular to drink sulphurous spring water for health purposes. The water of the town was such a draw for the wealthy Victorian patrons, that a bathhouse was built in the town centre, in what is now the Town Hall, and numerous luxury hotels were established, including Moffat House Hotel, which was designed by John Adam, and the Star Hotel, which was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. The sulphurous well was refurbished in the 1990s, and can still be accessed by the public.

Although the town's spa heyday has long past, it remains a very popular tourist destination, particularly with walkers, for the scenic hillside walks, natural beauty spots, and national routes, such as Gallow Hill (which did not gain that name accidentally), the Southern Upland Way, the Sir Walter Scott Way, and the 60 meter high Grey Mare's Tail waterfall.
