Mirfield

The small town of Mirfield in West Yorkshire is home to an 18th century canal that was constructed through the town to link the River Calder with other rivers in the area as part of the Calder and Hebble Navigation; an inland waterway that brought industry, development and growth to Mirfield. The textile industry thrived as did boat yards serving the canal and its traffic. With the coming of the railways in the 19th century, Mirfield got its station and the train eventually replaced the canal for transportation of goods and people. The canal today is still popular however with the many visitors who enjoy the journey for the beauty of the river, its banks and its wildlife.

Mirfield offers ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs as well as local visitor attractions, sites of interest and historic buildings including; the 13h century St. Mary's Church that due to the growth of Mirfield was rebuilt in 1826, although the original tower was retained. Delightful adventures on the canal are available at the Shepley Bridge Marina where visitors can take a longboat trip towards the centre of Mirfield along this picturesque and tranquil part of the canal. Each year on the third Sunday of August, the Mirfield Show brings a vibrant atmosphere along with thousands of visitors to the town for this popular agricultural show held at the Huddersfield Road Showground.
