The coastal town of Minehead in Somerset is located nearby both the border with Devon and the Exmoor National Park, which includes the Brendon Hills, the East Lyn Valley and the Vale of Porlock and stretches across both counties. The National Park offers diverse landscapes enjoyed by walkers with hilly open moorland and 34 miles of coast; several areas of the moor have been declared as Sites of Special Scientific interest due to the variety of wildlife, flora and fauna. Minehead’s position on the Bristol Channel coast once boasted a port in the 14th century that grew to become a major centre for the trade of salt, wool, cloth and coal. Since Victorian times though, it is tourism that has been the key industry in Minehead.
Minehead attracts large numbers of visitors every year who come to enjoy this part of the coast and the proximity of Exmoor National Park. The town offers ample amenities and shops, eateries and pubs as well as a wealth of things to see, do and enjoy in the area. Every Friday, the farmers market brings fresh produce and crafts to the avenue and the Edwardian style architecture of Minehead is a delight in itself. Each year since 1963, the town has hosted the Minehead and Exmoor Festival, a popular, week-long classical music festival.
