Milton Keynes is a large town in Buckinghamshire, within the London commuter belt, for which purpose it was purposefully designated as a "new town" in 1967 to incorporate several existing towns, including of Bletchley, Stony, Wolverton and Stratford as well as the smaller settlements between them. Milton Keynes was the name of one of the original villages, at the centre of the development. The town was carefully planned for an ideal layout so that the business and retail district of the town served each of the residential districts proportionally and with good consideration to the placement of parkland and recreational areas. Part of the vision of the development was to create a city within a forest, which lends to the beauty of the landscaped town. The town is intercepted by the Grand Union Canal and the River Ouse with its tributaries, around which several parks have been developed.
