Millom is a coastal town on the estuary of the River Duddon in Cumbria, England. The original hamlet was known as Holborn Hill, but the Victorian era brought mills and iron mining to the settlements, which was renamed in the Cumbrian dialect as Millom, which is a colloquial expression meaning "At the mills". At its peak Millom produced half a million tons of iron ore per year and much of this heritage is captured at the Millom Folk Museum. The are also nature reserves which are popular local attractions, of which there are two, both of which are located on the Duddon Estuary. The Millom Iron Works Local Nature Reserve, and the Hodbarrow Nature Reserve, which is owned by the RSPB, are internationally important areas for wildlife and a designated 'Site of Special Scientific Interest'. They are both important breeding sites for endangered tern species and for a number of wading birds and waterfowl.
