Merthyr Tydfil is an ancient town in the Welsh Taff Bargoed Valley. Known also as simply 'Merthyr', which is the Welsh word for "martyr", the town is named after Saint Tydfil, the daughter of the Celtic king Brychan. It is said the princess was killed by pagans in the town in circa 480 AD.
Merthyr is prettily situated among the valleys of Wales, by the Brecon Beacons National Park, and on a National Cycle Route. The valley is a popular area for outdoor pursuits, featuring the Parc Taf Bargoed and the Summit Centre (or Climbing Centre).
Archaeological evidence indicates that the area has been inhabited by human populations from approximately 1000 BCE. Hillfortswere are known to have been built and lived in during the Iron Age by a tribe known as the Silures, which were replaced later by Romans forts. Remains of the Roman fortress at Penydarren can still be seen, along with parts of the Roman Road network of the region, which forms part of a very popular walking route. The remains of the Norman Morlais Castle are also a popular site to visit.
