Merriott

The village of Merriott in Somerset is nearby the River Parrett that flows from its source in the hills around Chedington in Dorset, through the Somerset Levels to Burnham-on-Sea. The Bow Bridge crosses the river here and just alongside it is the 17th century Bow Mill House with a watermill. Merriott developed as a result of the excellent soil in the area and by the 14th century,  market-gardening was a key industry in Merriott. Much of the village history was lost as a consequence of a fire in 1811, resulting in many of the buildings we see today, being of early 19th century architecture. Amongst the surviving buildings is the village church that dates from the 13th century; the Grade II listed Church of All Saints underwent some modifications in the late 15th century and later, major restoration in 1860.

Merriott offers some amenities, along with two pubs and is within easy reach of other towns and villages offering additional choices for dining, leisure and shopping. The village and surrounding area are popular with visitors who come to enjoy the lovely setting with picturesque walks and nearby historic and visitor attractions.
