Melton Mowbray is a town in the county of Leicestershire benefits from the River Eye and the River Wreake and is perhaps most associated with its title as the "Rural Capital of Food". Melton Mowbray is famed for pork pies and Stilton cheese as well as, more recently, Quorn. The Tuxford & Tebbutt Creamery dates back to 1780 and is a popular visitor attraction today. Its name originates from the two original owners, Mr Tuxford the Stilton man and Mr Tebbutt the pork pie man. Up until 1965, both cheese and pork pies were made on the same site. Nowadays, Tuxford & Tebbutt has focused solely on cheese making using traditional cheese making skills to produce Blue Stilton Cheese. In the centre of the town on Nottingham Street, you will find "Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe" where tasty, genuine Melton pork pies can be sampled and purchased.
History too is a delight to explore here, with more that 700 important buildings noted for architectural and historic importance and 28 ancient monuments located in and around the town. The Melton Carnegie Museum explores the history of the environment of the Borough of Melton, including the famous Vale of Belvoir. Exhibits include fine sporting paintings, local crafts, archaeology, geology and even a two headed calf! Music is important here too and there are wonderful concerts held in the carousel bandstand in Melton Mowbray Park since August 1909. Belvoir Castle is worth taking time to explore too. This large castle has opened up some of its impressive rooms and gardens to the public.
