Melrose is a small and historic town in the Scottish Borders, and within the historic boundaries of the council area of Roxburghshire. It is the location of the substantial ruins of Melrose Abbey, which was founded by David I in the early 12th century for the Cistercian order, in place of a pre-existing monastery. It is generally regarded as one of the most beautiful monastic ruins in Great Britain, and is the resting place of the heart of Robert the Bruce (King Robert I). The heart was recovered by students during an excavation that was led in order to find the casket, which was then re-buried unopened in its proper place after being put into a protective lead cylinder. The abbey is a popular attraction and is open all year with a small admission fee.
The town of Melrose is attractive and welcoming, and boasts romantic views of the Eildon Hills, which are thought to be the burial place of King Arthur. Also nearby is the Roman fort of Trimontium, Dryburgh Abbey, and Abbotsford House (the home of novelist Sir Walter Scott).
