Matravers

The village of Matravers in the beautiful county of Dorset grew up on the cliffs as a cluster of stone cottages, surrounding a pretty village green. This area of Dorset is rich in diverse geology, wildlife, flora and fauna with sign-posted footpaths leading from the village to the sea and coves at Winspit. The monument on St Aldhelm's head just outside the village, honours the historic past that saw the development of radar by the Telecommunications Research Establishment at RAF Worth Matravers during World War II and there remains a Royal Observer Corps monitoring post nearby.

Matravers is home to a  well known pub, the Square and Compass, where an annual stone carving festival takes place and a fascinating little museum is found with exhibits and displays of fossils and other local artefacts. Although Matravers is a small village, is just a short walk or ride to the more developed town of Swanage to the north and just a short distance to the coast. The landscape here offers the opportunity to discover a wealth of outdoor activities and sites of interest.
