Matlock Bath

Matlock Bath is a small village south of Matlock in the county of Derbyshire that lies along the River Derwent. It was the discovery of warm springs in 1698 that would eventually lead to its prosperity and a Bath House was built to make the most of the springs. Princess Victoria visited in 1831 and Matlock was confirmed as a chic society venue of the era. Lord Byron wrote of its romantic character, comparing it with alpine Switzerland and it was Erasmus Darwin who recommended the area to Josiah Wedgwood I.

This spa town still thrives on tourism and has enough attractions to keep everyone happy. Atop the hill of Abraham is the lovely park named the Heights of Abraham where a former mine is located and is open to the public. Outdoor pursuits are well catered for in Matlock Bath, with High Tor a very popular place for climbers and walkers alike. The cable cars are close to the base of High Tor and serve the Heights of Abraham.
