Maryport

The attractive coastal town of Maryport with its rich maritime heritage is in the picturesque Lakeland district of Cumbria, on the Solway estuary. The history of this town by the sea and the lakes goes back over 2,000 years; with a Roman Fort, Georgian buildings, Victorian docks and prosperity that was built on coal mining, iron making, shipping and shipbuilding. The best place to discover the fascinating story of  Maryport is at its Maritime Museum with exhibits, paintings, models and other glimpses of what life was like here including; a whale’s tooth, telescopes and tools. Fletcher Christian, known for the mutiny on the Bounty as well as the owner of the Titanic, Thomas Ismay are both strongly associated with the town.

Maryport is a delightful harbour side town set amidst stunning scenery, offering lovely shoreline walks, sailing, an abundance of outdoor activities, historic buildings and visitor attractions. There are plenty of amenities and shops, eateries and pubs and a great choice of things to see, do and enjoy here.
