Market Drayton is a small market town in the county of Shropshire, and 'the home of gingerbread'. Back in 1793 there is a record of gingerbread in Market Drayton and at its peak, the traditional gingerbread biscuit was made by four bakers here; though the recipe differed somewhat from today as the gingerbread contained rum. Located on the River Tern, Market Drayton is on the Shropshire Union Canal and on the Regional Cycle Route.
Pretty, historic, half-timbered buildings that date from the 16th and 17th century, add to the appeal of Market Drayton that draws visitors who enjoy the wealth of history to be found here. Even the town's marketplace is ancient, dating from 1246 and still popular today. Although a fire in the 17th century destroyed much of the town, there remains plenty to explore and enjoy. A bell at the top of the Buttercross in the centre of the town is still in place, for people to ring if there is ever another fire.
Fordhall Farm is well worth a visit when you are in Market Drayton, it is 140 acres of community-owned organic farmland with a farm trail that is open to the public.
