The market town of March lies in the Fenland area of the county of Cambridgeshire with a flat distinctive landscape; only interrupted by church spires and an occasional windmill. The rich peat soil of the area yields a harvest of cereals, root crops, fruit and bulbs that are available in the markets and shops of the area. Located on the banks of the River Nene, March was once an island surrounded by marshes. As the land drained, the town grew and prospered as a trading and religious centre.
As an important railway centre, March is easily reached and a great base from which to explore the area and beyond. In the month of March, ‘The March March march’ is held; a walk from the town of March to Cambridge that has happened every year since 1979. The participants are the students and academics from Cambridge University. The March Museum on the High Street was built as a girls’ school in the 1850’s and contains a fascinating collection of local memorabilia, both from March, and the surrounding villages.
