Manningtree is a town in the Tendring district of Essex, in the South-East of England. It closely neighbours the heavily urbanised towns of Lawford and Mistley, all of which are often referred to collectively as "Manningtree", although Manningtree itself is actually the smallest town in England. It is located on the Holbrook Bay, along the course of the River Stour, in the attractive Dedham Vale. It is a popular tourist destination due to its pleasant scenery and local knot of traditional villages, in addition to the excellent access it offers to the more lively locations including London, to which the Manningtree railway station provides a direct train link.
Manningtree is famous for its association with Matthew Hopkins, the Witchfinder General, who in 1644 claimed to have overheard several local women in conversation with the devil. The women were later executed as witches.
