Manchester is a vast, cosmopolitan city in the county of Greater Manchester that has the Cheshire Plain to the south and the stunning Pennines to the north and east. From a more modest start as a small town, Manchester experienced an astonishing rate of growth at the turn of the 19th century. This growth is attributed to the boom in textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution and resulted in Manchester becoming the world's first industrialised city.
The Manchester of today has every cultural, commercial and leisure facility you would expect from a thoroughly modern city and is a centre of the arts, media, higher education and commerce. Manchester is considered to be the UK’s second city and played host to the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Sporting associations abound of course, as this is the home of two of the best known football teams in the UK, Manchester United and Manchester City.
