Malvern is a moderately sized town in the English county of Worcestershire, which includes the historical settlement of Great Malvern. It is attractively situated on the steep eastern flank of the Malvern Hills. Archaeological evidence has been found, which indicates that the area was settled at least as early as the Bronze Age, around 1000 BC, including the impressive Iron Age Earthworks that were once occupied by the Roman Army. It grew as a spa town during the Victorian period and remains a popular tourist destination due to its scenic location in the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This is a particularly popular visiting place for enthusiasts of the fantasy authers J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, who both gained inspiration from the town and landscape for their works. The poet W. H. Auden also taught in the town, while the 14th century poet William Langland's based his The Visions of Piers Plowman, on the landscape of the Malvern Hills.
