Malton

Malton is a small market town of approximately 4,000 people in North Yorkshire, England. Visitor attractions to the town include the signposted remains of the Roman fort at 'Orchard Fields', and Eden Camp — a large wartime museum on the site of a former World War II prisoner of war camp. Eden Camp is both a museum and an education centre, which is particularly well designed for children as it offers very visual and sensory depiction of wartime that footage and textbooks cannot convey.

Malton is the commercial centre of the region and the town centre offers lots of small traditional and independent shops to choose from, in addition to a good selection of traditional pubs, restaurants and cafés.

The town is situated on the site of a very busy former Roman settlement, housing an important cavalry fort, the remains of which, lie in Old Malton under former pasture land known as Orchard Fields. Roman Malton housed at least one fine townhouse, furnished with painted walls, mosaics, heated rooms and sculptures. Examples of these are available to view at the Malton Museum in the Old Town Hall.
