Mallaig

Mallaig is a Highland port in the Scottish council area of Lochaber, which is on the west coast of the country. Mallaig is the terminus of the West Highland railway line, and the town is linked to Fort William by the "Road to the Isles". The village was founded in the 1840s, and expanded rapidly with the arrival of the railway, to become the main commercial fishing port on the West Coast of Scotland, and for a period, the busiest herring port in Europe. Mallaig is also known for its traditionally smoked kippers .

Mallaig is now a popular holiday destination. A ferry service operates from the port to Armadale, on the Isle of Skye; along with Inverie in Knoydart; and the isles of Rùm, Eigg, Muck, and Canna. The village has good amenities, with several restaurants, cafes, and takeaways, a choice of holiday accommodation, three pubs, minimarkets, gift shops, an art gallery, and a petrol station.
