Maidenhead is a town in Berkshire, England, on the River Thames and within commuting distance of London. The village of Taplow, on the opposite bank of the river, is in the neighbouring county of Buckinghamshire, while the town of Windsor is located just a few miles down the road, along with the Royal Residence of Windsor Castle.
The name "Maidenhead" refers to the 'Maiden Hythe' or, wharf, was built by the Saxons, which in turn is thought to derive its name from the nearby Great Hill of Taplow, which the early Britons called the 'Mai Dun'. The current Maidenhead Bridge, now stands in place of the old wharf as a local landmark, dating from 1777. The construction of the bridge caused Maidenhead to develop as a coaching stage and so the town's high street became populated with a number of inns, guest houses, public houses and small shops, including the Greyhound Inn, which is still present in the town in use by the NatWest Bank. The location is famous as the place where King Charles I met his children for the last time before his execution in 1649. A plaque on the building commemorates this sad meeting.
Attractions of the region include Windsor Castle, Bispham Abbey, the Berkshire Downs, and Legoland, to name only a few.
