Lynton

The small town of Lynton in the attractive county of Devon is set in the diverse and beautiful landscape of the Exmoor National Park, at the top of a gorge above neighbouring Lynmouth and connected to it by the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway. The Cliff Railway opened in 1890 and is a unique piece of water powered engineering with two lift cars connected by a continuous cable travelling over 500 feet. It works by using the discarded water from the lower car to cause the heavier top car to descend. It was the increase in tourism that brought prosperity here around the 19th century, when the town played host to the wealthy and famous of the day like Shelley, Wordsworth and Coleridge who were said to be enchanted by the rare beauty and peace of Lynton.

Visitors come to Lynton to enjoy the lovely town that the Victorians called ‘Little Switzerland’ with its pretty architecture set amidst the spectacular combination of sweeping moorland, rugged cliffs and tranquil sheltered bays. Lynton offers a variety of shops along its winding streets as well as eateries and pubs and the 13th century St. Mary’s church that overlooks the sea; although the tower is original, much has been added and reconstructed over the centuries. Lynton is the perfect for visitors wanting to explore the rich, diverse nature of the area with the moors, coastal paths and lovely walks that occasionally reward with glimpses of the beautiful red deer and wild Exmoor ponies.
