The large village of Lyndhurst in the county of Hampshire is also within the naturally beautiful New Forest area and is a popular tourist destination for visitors looking to enjoy the wealth of activities and splendour here. Lyndhurst has been known as the ‘Capital’ of the Forest since William the Conqueror established The New Forest in 1079 as a royal hunting ground. The New Forest Museum is here in Lyndhurst and offers a wonderful guide to the history, heritage and habitats of the vast forest; making it the perfect place to start exploring.
Lyndhurst offers the visitor plenty to see, do and enjoy with a wide range of shops, charming tea rooms, traditional pubs, a choice of cafes and restaurants as well as visitor and cultural attractions. The ‘Alice’, who inspired Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, lived here after her marriage to Reginald Hargreaves and she is buried in the graveyard of the church of St. Michael and All Angels. The church itself is of interest too; built in the late 19th century of different coloured bricks, atop one of the highest points in the village. The church contains an important fresco by Lord Leighton and stained-glass by Charles Kempe, William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and others.
