The market town and port of Lymington in the county of Hampshire, lies on the banks of bank of the Lymington River on the Solent and is within the naturally beautiful New Forest area. Looking out over Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, the town has a passenger and car ferry that connects with the Isle of Wight. Development of the community here came in the Middle Ages from making salt, later in the early 19th century the town had a thriving shipbuilding industry and Lymington is also said to be a place where smugglers plied their trade; with talk of smugglers' tunnels that run from the old inns to the town quay under the High Street.
Lymington remains a maritime town that is a major yachting centre with three marinas and as a sailing resort attracts enthusiasts throughout the year. Visitors also come to enjoy the beautiful area, attractive coast and pretty Georgian town with ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs and the unique open-air seawater bath that was built in 1833. The tradition of the market continues with a Saturday a market held in the High Street whose origins date back to the 13th century.
