Lyme Regis

The coastal town and fishing port of Lyme Regis lies in Lyme Bay, in the beautiful county of Dorset; surrounded by stunning coastlines and countryside. This area has been awarded World Heritage Site Status boasting diverse wildlife, geology, flora and fauna as well as fascinating fossil finds. Looking out across the English Channel, Lyme Regis is a popular destination and an inspiration for artists and writers; it features in Jane Austen's novel Persuasion as well as the film and novel, The French Lieutenant's Woman, by local writer John Fowles. The town grew from an early settlement that was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 to a major port in the 13th century.

Lyme Regis today is an unspoiled seaside resort with friendly shops, a choice of eateries and pubs, cultural and visitor attractions plus a busy fishing port with the world famous Cobb harbour. The best start for exploring the rich history and heritage here is the Lyme Regis Museum; housed in a magnificent historic building that was built in 1900 by Thomas Philpot, you will find a collection of maritime and historic artefacts, paintings and prints along with maritime and domestic objects.
