Lydney is a small town in the county of Gloucestershire, along the banks of the River Severn and located amidst the beautiful scenery of the nearby Forest of Dean. One of the most notable places here is Lydney Park gardens, with its exceptional Roman temple. The temple was built in the 4th century to honour Nodens, a Celtic divinity. Lydney Park is still in the hands of the Bathurst family who bought it in 1719 and added to it in 1875 when the Rev. William Hiley Bathurst built a new house in the centre of the deer park, overlooking the River Severn. The house building included the creation of a formal garden and shrubberies and where the old house was, is now the Taurus Crafts centre.
Lydney today is a busy place with a wide range of businesses, shops, pubs, eateries and sites of interest both in and around the town. For visitors looking for beautiful outdoor spaces, Lydney is ideal for the Forest of Dean with its Dean Forest Railway and of course, Lydney Park Gardens with its Taurus Crafts Centre.
