The large town of Luton in the county of Bedfordshire is busy, modern town and yet it nestles in the picturesque Chilterns; surrounded by hills and outstanding natural beauty. Luton was rebuilt after the great fire of 1336 but there remains much history for the visitor to explore. By the 16th century, a brick making industry was developing around Luton, bringing some prosperity and further rebuilding as many of the older wooden houses were rebuilt in brick. London Luton Airport was opened in 1938 and has grown to become a major international airport; during the Second World War it did its national duty and doubled as an RAF base.
An iconic advert in the 70’s, introduced the unique accent of the Luton locals to television viewers; the ad for Campari has Lorraine Chase being asked if she had "truly Wafted in from Paradise" where she answered "Nah, from Luton airport". Every years, the well supported Luton Carnival is held on the late May bank holiday and has grown to become one of the largest one-day carnivals in Europe. Hat making has long been an industry here and you can explore its origins along with other fascinating exhibits at the Luton Museum in Wardown Park. The museum also houses a gallery where works by local and national artists are displayed.
