Lostwithiel

The small town of Lostwithiel in the scenic county of Cornwall lies at the head of the estuary of the River Fowey and is a picturesque medieval town with a rich history. The town was founded by Norman lords who built the original Restormel Castle, one of the four chief Norman castles of Cornwall. The town developed to become a major port for the tin trade and throughout the 14th century it was the capital of Cornwall. Silting of the river meant it gradually became impossible for sea-going ships to navigate and Lostwithiel lost its shipping trade to Fowey. The town thrived again in the 19th century when iron was mined and the Lostwithiel prospered.

Lostwithiel is perfectly placed for visitors wishing to make the most of this beautiful area with its breathtaking scenery, unspoilt beaches and attractions. The town has plenty of amenities, lots of lovely antiques shops, a great choice of eateries and pubs as well as an award winning produce market. Throughout the year, Lostwithiel hosts colourful, popular events that celebrate food, music, arts, antiques, beer and cider.
