Longton

Longton is a small rural community in the South Ribble of Lancashire, England, neighbouring Preston. The village is known to be of ancient origin, having been used by the monks of Penwortham Priory for agricultural purposes in the middle-ages, for which reason it is known as a sort of "holy land". The name of the village features in documents that refer to a priest of the village dating back to 1153 and it is expected that is was the monks who established the first chapel in the village.

Longton Brickcroft is a nearby nature reserve that was adapted in 1998 from a former mine and brickworks, and which is open for public use. The reserve is now an attractive watery landscape, with naturally developing greenery, and is a popular fishing ground and walkers route. The Brickcroft has been made particularly accommodating to birdwatchers and botanists, with ample seating, footpaths and picnic areas as well as modern family-friendly toilet facilities within the visitor centre, which displays information on the site's history and local wildlife.
