Lochmaben is a small town in the county of Dumfries and Galloway, in southern Scotland, near Lockerbie. It enjoys an attractive location amid peaceful rolling countryside, and now serves largely as a commuter dormitory for Dumfries and Lockerbie, due to close proximity, although it now lacks a rail link. This is a quiet and village-like destination, ideal for relaxing outdoor pursuits, that features a broad and simple high street, and an 18 hole golf course at kirk loch, which is also popular for sailing and fishing.
The town is a very ancient settlement, due to its position on route between England, Scotland and Ireland. The earliest known inhabitants were in the neolithic period, living on small islands, or "crannogs", in the lochs. The town later became an important castle town, for strategic purposes, passing between successive ruling nations until the end of the 16th century, when peace finally rendered the most recent castle obsolete.
