Llangollen

The town of Llangollen in Denbighshire, Wales lies in a picturesque location on the River Dee as it journeys from majestic Snowdonia, via Chester before meeting the sea at an estuary between Wales and the Wirral Peninsula in England. Llangollen also benefits from the proximity of the Berwyn Mountains; attracting walkers and climbers to the area. Denbighshire is in north east Wales and is the oldest inhabited part of Wales as evidenced by the Pontnewydd Paleaolithic site that has revealed the remains of Neanderthals dating back more than 225,000 years ago. Looking down over Llangollen is Castell Dinas Bran, the former stronghold of the Princes of Powys and just beyond the castle, is the limestone escarpment known as the Eglwyseg Rocks that continues north to the area known as World's End.

Llangollen has a wealth of natural attractions, ample amenities and historic sites that attract visitors throughout the year, including the mountains, white water rivers, the River Dee canals with horse-drawn boats, the popular Llangollen Steam Railway offering journeys through the beautiful Dee Valley and numerous visitor attractions, gardens and historic buildings. The World Heritage Site, The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, built by Thomas Telford in the 19^th century is over a 1000 feet long and stands 126 feet above the river Dee. The aqueduct can be crossed by narrow boat from The Wharf in Llangollen and you can enjoy a wonderful three hour return trip. The area around the castle too is well worth a visit with its Panorama Walk and monument to local poet I.D. Hooson .
