Livingston is a town in the Scottish council area of West Lothian. It is a post-war new town, which was established 1962, and is located 15 miles to the west of Edinburgh and 30 miles to the east of Glasgow, while neighbouring the towns of Broxburn and Bathgate.
This is the largest town in West Lothian, and is named after the ancient village of Livingston, which was largely open farm land, amid a knot of neighbouring villages, many of which were absorbed by the New Town. The name Livingston comes from the Flemish entrepreneur, De Leving, who was granted land in the area in the 12th century, where he built a fortified tower around which the original settlement developed.
The town is a popular base for tourists as it provides comfortable access to the two best known cities of Scotland, Edinburgh and Glasgow, while also having excellent amenities and transport links.
Attractions in the area include Almondell & Calderwood Country Park, Beecraigs Country Park, House of the Binns, Blackness Castle, Edinburgh Zoo, and Edinburgh Castle, to name only a small selection.
