Liverpool was first noted for the River Mersey, a tidal basin which flows into the Irish Sea that was considered the safest mooring place for boats. The first commercial wet dock in the world was built here in 1715. Today it remains a thriving waterway that is the lifeblood of the city, both for commerce and tourism. It is also an excellent starting point for viewing this vibrant city.

Liverpool's evolution has encompassed many historic events, but is probably most known as the birthplace of the Beatles. The group are still celebrated here and there is a wealth of attractions dedicated to them. Liverpool is a Mecca for fans from around the world. It is home to the world famous Cavern Club in Mathew Street, where the Fab Four made their debut performance with Brian Epstein in the audience on the 21st February 1961. The National Trust too have honoured the group; Mendips, John Lennon's childhood home in Liverpool, opened to the public for the first time in March 2003. Visitors can see the environment which influenced John's creativity, where he first started playing and writing music that would change the world and influence generations to come.
