Liss

The village of Liss in the county of Hampshire is within the East Hampshire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is surrounded by beautiful countryside rich with diverse wildlife, flora and fauna. Evidence shows that Liss has long been inhabited, with archaeological finds revealing flint spearheads, arrowheads, flakes and cores dating from Palaeolithic and Mesolithic times and later in the Iron Age and throughout the Roman period there was a settlement here. Around 900, Alfred the Great created an Abbey at Lyss Place under the control of St. Mary's Abbey at Winchester as a retreat for nuns. Liss relied mainly on agriculture up until the 19th century when peppermint was produced and it was around this time that major growth and development took place.

 

Liss and the surrounding area offers the visitor ample amenities and shops, eateries and pubs as well as visitor, cultural and historic attractions throughout the region. For outdoor enthusiasts there is plenty to enjoy in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty including woodland walks, country rambles and bird watching.
