The market town of Liskeard in the scenic county of Cornwall is situated at the head of the Looe valley with the coast to the south and the moors to the northwest; amidst breathtaking scenery and diverse countryside. The market charter for the town was granted in 1240 and the town became an important centre for agriculture although it was the tin mining in the 19th century that brought the greatest change, development, population growth and prosperity. Liskeard became known as a ‘stannary town’; where tin miners brought their tin for weighing, assaying and taxation.
Liskeard is a popular destination for visitors and offers ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs along its narrow streets. In and around the town are visitor attractions and historic sites, including Cornwalls second largest church, St. Martin’s. It was built by the Normans and rebuilt around the 15th century and has a well that is supposed to have healing powers, well known as ‘Pipe Well’.
