Linlithgow is a Royal Burgh in the Scottish council area of West Lothian. It is located by Linlithgow Loch, on the former Edinburgh to Stirling road and until the Industrial Revolution it was largely farmland, although boasting a rich cultural history as the birthplace of King James V, and Mary, Queen of Scots, who once lived at the impressive Linlithgow Palace, the substantial remains of which, and parkland, are now a major Scottish tourist attraction.
The town has a coat of arms that features a black greyhound bitch tethered to an oak tree, which depicts the legend of the black greyhound whose master was sentenced to death by starvation on an island in the loch. It is said that she swam to the island each day with food for him. A pub in the town named "The Black Bitch" is one of the oldest pubs in Scotland.
