Liddesdale

The Valley of Liddesdale in Roxburghshire Scotland is a vast expanse that reaches from Peel Fell to the River Esk and has been the gateway to Scotland for more than a thousand years. Invading armies used the Middle Marches route to pass from England to Scotland and it was the scene of great battles during the Wars of Independence. The daunting and some say, sinister 13^th century ’Hermitage Castle’ was built as a strong fortress within the Liddesdale Valley in order to intimidate and dominate. Although a shadow of its former self, the castle remains an imposing sight today. Legend tells that one of the castle’s earliest owners, Lord de Soulis, was a magician who had sold his soul to the devil and later boiled alive in a great cauldron for his crimes.

The Liddesdale Valley is rugged place of diverse natural beauty that attracts visitors who come to explore the countryside, climb the fells and enjoy the stunning views across heather and white grass and peat bogs. Bird watchers too venture here to sight curlew, pewit and skylark as well as buzzards. A visit to the valley though would only be complete though after seeing the massive fortress that is Hermitage Castle, one of the oldest surviving castles in all of Scotland.
