Lichfield is a city in the county of Staffordshire that is now famous as the place where ‘the Staffordshire Hoard’ was discovered. It was in a field here that the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found in Britain was unearthed. There is history at every turn in Lichfield; it retains much of the original ladder-shaped street pattern that was planned when the early town developed in the 12th century under Bishop Clinton. Where the magnificent cathedral stands today, is thought to be where the first church of Lichfield was located and went on to become the ecclesiastical centre of the Kingdom of Mercia.
With historic streets and buildings, unspoilt charm, fabulous visitor attractions like the Cathedral with its striking three spires, Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum and the Heritage Exhibition as well as a wonderful selection of cultural attractions, restaurants, pubs, shops and easy access to surrounding areas, Lichfield offers the visitor a wealth of choice.
