Leyland is a moderately sized market town situated in the South Ribble borough of Lancashire, England. The town is conveniently close to the city of Preston, and a short train ride away from the popular tourist resort of Blackpool. Leyland's key features include the Leyland Cross, which is the oldest structure in town, Saint Andrew's Parish Church, built circa 1200AD and a stone cross thought to date back to Saxon times.
Visitors wishing to explore some of Leyland’s rich industrial heritage may like to visit the Fox Lane Conservation Area, where handloom weavers once worked in basement workshops. The extensive Worden Park is also a very popular place to visit, and can be found just on the outskirts of Leyland, and features magnificent gardens believed to have been designed by William Andrews Nesfield.
The largest Viking silver treasure trove outside of Russia was found in the South Ribble in 1840, while workmen were repairing an embankment. Now known as the Cuerdale Hoard, the discovery includes the remains of a lead chest containing thousands of Viking, Saxon, Arab and Byzantine coins. The coins date as far back as 900AD. A number of these coins are now held at the Harris Museum in Preston. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Leyland is a vibrant town, rich in heritage and close to countless attractions across the region, including Camelot Theme Park, the British Commercial Vehicle Museum, and the Longton Brickcroft and Cuerden Valley Country Park nature reserves.
