Lewes is the county town of East Sussex in England. It is prettily situated among a group of chalk hills of the South Downs, creating a picturesque townscape that was highly regarded by artist and textile designer William Morris, who said: "You can see Lewes lying like a box of toys under a great amphitheatre of chalk hills ... on the whole it is set down better than any town I have seen in England."
The area is known to have been settled by prehistoric tribes and it is believed to have once been the Roman settlement known as Mutuantonis, due to a series of artefacts found in the area. A Saxons motte-and-bailey castle was also built at the site overlooking the river, followed by the Norman Lewes Castle on the site of the Saxon original. The town developed as an important bridging point of the River Ouse, and as a market town. It is now a central communication point between the transport links of the region, which has aided the town's development as a tourist destination.
