The charmingly named Letchworth Garden City is a town in the county of Hertfordshire, that was planned to combine the best of ‘town and country’ living.
The land was originally bought by Quakers who had intended to farm the area and build a Quaker community; however, the soil proved to be chalky and of poor agricultural value. Designed as one of the first ‘new towns’ and founded in 1903 by Ebenezer Howard, Letchworth is the world's first Garden City and it inspired more; including Welwyn Garden City and smaller projects worldwide, exerting great influence on town planning.
The town’s centre has a host of attractions with plenty of choices for dining, shopping and cultural pleasures. The two museums, arts centre and regular farmers’ markets keep the town bustling with activity and visitors will enjoy the splendour of the unique architecture found in the Spirella Building and The Cloisters. Outdoor activities too are well catered for with golf courses, parks and a 13-mile route that encircles the town.
