The town of Leiston in the county of Suffolk is probably best known for its Abbey dating from 1363. The chapel of Leiston Abbey can still be seen today although the rest is ruins. During the Dissolution Act in 1536 the Abbey became a farm with a farmhouse being built into the ruins and later, a Georgian front was added. Leiston found prosperity in the late 19th century as a manufacturing town dominated by the ‘Leiston Works’ that made steam tractors and metal products, including munitions during both world wars. There is a large museum on the site that tells the history of the works.
The centre of Leiston and its High Street offer ample amenities and shops, pubs and eateries, a leisure centre and parks. The town is a hive of activity as it serves the surrounding agricultural district and is where visitors pass through on their way to the nearby towns of Aldeburgh, Snape and Thorpeness. The town boasts Suffolk’s oldest, purpose-built cinema, the Leiston Picture House, a half-timbered building with street front shops.
