Leighton Buzzard is a welcoming town in Bedfordshire, in the scenic Chiltern Hills. This traditional market town traces its history back to Saxon times and pottery and jewellery from the 6th century have been excavated in the town along with earthworks believed to date back to Roman times. The Domesday Book makes reference to the town here in 1086 where it is called Lestone. This is interesting as it mentions that Lestone had a market which is still held in Leighton Buzzard to this day. With the advent of the Canal and the Railway in the early 1800’s, Leighton Buzzard was on the road to vast growth.
Old buildings, new developments, modern amenities and quaint reminders of bygone days are what greet today’s visitors to Leighton Buzzard. The Grand Union Canal
still plays an active role as it passes through here; the canal runs from London to Birmingham. Countryside walks along the towpath offer a glimpse at the past as well as diverse wildlife and scenery. Canal cruises can be booked or hired for those who want to enjoy the pleasures of a day on the water. The Leighton Buzzard Railway is another attraction worth visiting; a narrow gauge railway running for five and a half miles from the station in Pages Park, Billington Road. The railway uses restored steam engines and is great fun for steam enthusiasts and children.
