Lee-on-the-solent

The small seaside town of Lee-on-the-Solent in the county of Hampshire was designed as a resort in the 19th century by Charles Edmund Newton Robinson. Charles’ father was an art curator and collector who funded the project between 1884 and 1894 when the town was established and laid out. The railway service though came to an end in the 1930’s and the resort ceased to be developed. It still attracts visitors though who come primarily to enjoy the outstanding scenery and opportunity to enjoy outdoor pursuits in the area.

Lee-on-the-Solent offers a lovely variety of shops, eateries and pubs as well as beautiful walks and activities along the seafront. The town is popular with jet-skiers and kite surfers who can be seen during the summer months; boats too can be hired during the summer. Lee-on-the-Solent is home to the world’s largest collection of rare hovercraft at the Hovercraft Museum. The collection includes some of the earliest and largest hovercraft and is located on the main road along the seafront. This unique museum was awarded a prestigious Red Plaque by the Transport Trust to recognise the collection's importance as a notable transport site.
