Laurencekirk

The town of Laurencekirk in Aberdeenshire, Scotland lies in a valley between the Hill of Garvock and the Cairn O' Mount and from here you can see the well known landmark of the Johnston Tower that sits on the peak of the Garvock. Laurencekirk has a long history and includes the making snuff boxes amongst the key industries that contributed to its growth and development. There is even a unique airtight hinge known as a ‘Laurencekirk hinge’ that was invented here by James Sandy. In the late 18th century, Laurencekirk came to be in the possession of a Judicial Law Lord, Frances Garden of Troup, who set about planning an industrial village and introduced two of the industries here that would thrive and prosper; linen weaving and boxmaking that even now associate the name of Laurencekirk with plain and Jacard linen as well as snuff boxes. Agriculture too has played its part here and with the coming of the railways in 1849, its agricultural trade prospered and the first bank at Laurencekirk opened for business in 1854.

Laurencekirk offers ample amenities as well as some incredible natural attractions in the area, historic sites and easy access to nearby towns and cities for additional choices of activities; the Edinburgh to Aberdeen railway line passes through the town.

Laurencekirk sits at the heart of the Howe o' the Mearns, an area where the town of Kincardine was once the primary town. Kincardine ceased to exist during the Middle Ages though and the only visible sign of its previous existence is the ruin of Kincardine Castle nearby.
