Lauder

The Royal Burgh of Lauder is a town in the Scottish Borders, within the Edinburgh commuter belt. The Sir Walter Scott Way long-distance footpath from passes through the town, which is also on the route of a Roman Road thought to be Dere Street, which is now Malcome Rode, as it was later utilised by Malcolm III during years of constant warfare against England. Malcome Rode is the only old road in Scotland carrying the name of an individual. The modern town still features a number of the historical landmarks acquired over the centuries, including the 16th century Tolbooth, which now serves as the Town Hall.

Nearby Castle Hill was once the site of the Crown Fort, where countless battles have been fought over the centuries. It is now the location of Thirlestane Castle, which incorporates some of the original walls of the ancient fort. The castle and its extensive grounds are now in the care of a charitable trust, and is a very popular tourist attraction that is open to the general public.
