Largs

The seaside town of Largs in Ayrshire, Scotland is a popular resort town with a history strongly linked to the Vikings; an age old link still celebrated with an annual festival each September. The importance of the tourism industry began to make its mark in Largs around the early 19th century, as the small village saw the building of large hotels, a pier and later, the arrival of the railway. Train travel made it so much easier for visitors to reach Largs and allowed for day trippers too. The ease of travel also lead to a growth in the population here as Largs became a fashionable place to live. It is set in a beautiful location amidst the stunning scenery of the Firth of Clyde.

Largs offers plenty of reasons to visit, with ample amenities, shops, eateries, historic sites and attractions in the area, including the award winning Vikingar Centre that offers fascinating insights into the history of Viking life. One of the most popular attractions here in Largs must be 'Nardinis', the famous ice cream parlour, cafe and restaurant on the pretty Esplanade. Right across from Nardinis is the 19th century St. Columba's Parish Church with its Heritage Centre and stunning stained glass windows along with the original Father Willis organ. Nearby is Kelburn Castle, believed to be the oldest castle in Scotland to have been continuously inhabited by the same family.
