The town of Langport in Somerset lies on the banks of the River Parrett, near where it meets the River Yeo in a picturesque area of diverse landscapes and abundant natural scenery. It is at Langport that the river and moor can be crossed; with a causeway over the moor and an important bridge over the river. Langport is thought to have been settled since at least Roman times and lies on the ancient way from Glastonbury to Taunton. The town is made up of two parts, one high on the hill and one alongside the river. Langport on the hill grew as a defensive position and Langport on the river grew to facilitate trade. In medieval times, Langport was an important centre for cloth making and by 1562 it was officially recognised as a borough of great antiquity and granted a market charter.
Langport offers ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs and is a beautiful town that retains much of its old world charm. The town’s importance in the 18th century is evident in its fine architecture as well as the historic wharfs and warehouses. Langport is a popular destination for visitors wishing to explore and enjoy this remote, unspoilt area known as the Somerset Levels and Moors. There are many scenic walks amidst varied flora, fauna and wildlife and outdoor activities are well catered for in the area.
