Langholm is a burgh town in the Dumfries and Galloway county of southern Scotland. It is attractively situated on the River Esk, among a series of four hills, the highest being the 300 meter-high Whita Hill, with its commemorative obelisk to the life and achievements of soldier and statesman, Sir John Malcom. The town is also notable as the birthplace of Scottish communist poet, Hugh MacDiarmid and architectural engineer Thomas Telford. Langholm is also the seat of Clan Armstrong, of which First Man on the Moon, Neil Armstrong is a member. The clan is represented internationally by the official Clan Armstrong Trust.
The area is popular among visitors for its various way-marked walks, including the moorland and Langholm Walks, and for the many attractions and beauty spots such as the Old Blacksmith's Shop, and an authentic Tibetan Monastery.
